Change of plans

Like so many people in the Northeast, we had to change our plans this weekend. Thank you, Irene! H's mom and godmother are here, and we'd booked a long weekend in the city.

It may not have been quite the weekend we'd hoped for last week, but it could have been much (much!) worse. H has spent lots of time making the house dryer - cleaning and rerouting the gutters these past few months, which really helped these past 24 hours. We never expected a hurricane, but we did want to be ready for rainy days. Yesterday things ramped up a bit and, he and our lovely houseguest spent hours working on the basement to make sure we would stay as dry as possible - she had lots of helpful tips from work she's done on her place in the south of France.

H's mom and I escaped for a few errands. Our farmer's market was cancelled, so we took a ride out to the farm to pick up our weekly share. And stopped at another farm market (one I've wanted to visit for months now), where we tromped around in muddy fields and picked armloads full of zinnias and sunflowers for the house. So pretty.

Change of plans this weekend, thanks, Irene

Sunflowers

The worst of the storm is behind us now. It rained and gusted all night. There's still lots of wind. The ground is soggy, the pond is higher than it was in winter and our little brook is racing.

It washed up over the bridge last night, and we lost a tree.

Tree

Luckily, it cleared both of the cars, and there is only a small bit of damage to the fence it landed on - whew! There's lots of branches down, too, and a tree that has always had a little lean to it, is bending much closer to the house than it should be. Let's hope it holds on until the tree man comes. Yes, it's been an exciting weekend here...Not surprisingly, the cats are a little nervous...still traipsing around the house, staying close together and to us. We'll all be happy when the wind finally quiets down - hopefully just a few more hours to go now...
