On missing the Jeûne Fédéral

Somehow I realized yesterday that I'd missed the Jeûne Fédéral. That I missed it (by nearly a week) and that I miss it officially.

It's a holiday that always puzzled me a bit when we lived in Switzerland - a holiday that is called "federal" but only celebrated in 4 cantons (1 of which honors a different day that the other 3 just to keep it all interesting).

In any case, H and I had a lovely tradition of making an extra long weekend out of it each year. Photos can be seen here, here and here. What I wouldn't do for some pampering in Bad Ragaz or a day long hike in Zermatt about now!

This weekend held a small ersatz - a lovely walk on the trails here (love it that the trail head starts right outside the front door) and a warm soak (in the tub I wasn't so convinced about first) in the backyard - not too bad for an early autumn Sunday...
